Quran for healing
Al-Fatihah and the surahs of refuge for illness, with audio, and a clear account of what the tradition says about recitation alongside medical treatment.

The Quran describes itself as shifa, healing, and the most clearly established recitation for illness is Al-Fatihah. Bukhari records a companion reciting it over a man who had been bitten, the man recovering, and the Prophet ﷺ confirming the practice. The surahs of refuge are the other established pair.
What is not established is a specific surah assigned to a specific illness — a surah for cancer, a surah for fever, a surah for each organ. Those lists circulate widely and have no basis in the sunnah. Reciting the Quran over a sick person is established; the detailed mapping of verses to diseases is not.
None of this replaces treatment. The Prophet ﷺ instructed people to seek treatment, and the tradition treats medicine as part of the means Allah has provided. Recitation alongside a doctor is the practice; recitation instead of one is not.
What to recite
What to do when visiting someone who is ill
The established practice is du’a, and it is simple: ask Allah to remove the harm, with the wording reported in Bukhari and Muslim. Recite what you know of the Quran quietly if it comforts them. Do not perform, do not diagnose, and do not tell them their illness is a test of their faith in a way that adds guilt.
What the sources actually say
The Quran as healing
Quran 17:82: "And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers." The verse describes the Quran as a whole, not a verse for each ailment.
Al-Fatihah confirmed as ruqyah
Bukhari 5736 records the companion’s recitation over a scorpion sting and the Prophet’s ﷺ confirmation of it.
Questions
Which surah is for healing?
Al-Fatihah is the one specifically confirmed as a ruqyah in the hadith, and the surahs of refuge are recited for protection and healing. There is no authentic list assigning specific surahs to specific illnesses.
Can I recite over myself?
Yes. Reciting over yourself is established and is what most people do. There is no requirement for another person to do it for you.
Should I stop my medication if I feel better after reciting?
No. Never stop prescribed treatment because of a change in how you feel. Talk to your doctor. Recovery through treatment is also from Allah.
Is it permissible to charge for ruqyah?
The companions took a payment for the ruqyah they performed and the Prophet ﷺ permitted it, so it is not forbidden in itself. What is warned against is turning it into a business built on fear, or charging for diagnoses of the unseen.
