Surah Maryam (19) is 98 verses and takes about about 20 minutes. It is the surah that tells the story of the birth of Isa, with Maryam as the central figure, and it is one of the most beautiful in the Quran by any measure.
Reciting it during pregnancy is a widespread practice across South Asia and the Middle East, and many families read it through the pregnancy. It is worth being clear: there is no authentic hadith prescribing Surah Maryam during pregnancy. The practice is a custom, and a good one — it is recitation of the Quran, and its subject is birth and mercy — but it is custom rather than instruction.
If it brings comfort and connection during pregnancy, keep doing it. What you should not take on is the belief that skipping it, or failing to finish it, has consequences. That part is not from the sources.
What to recite
What the surah is about
Maryam is a surah of the mercy that arrives in impossible circumstances: the elderly Zakariyya given a son, Maryam giving birth alone and being given water and dates, and the infant speaking from the cradle. Read at any point in life, that is its argument.
If you want a daily practice in pregnancy
Pick something you can keep for nine months. Three to five minutes of recitation a day, every day, will do more for you than a plan to finish long surahs that collapses in the second trimester. If you want to read as well as listen, keep a translation alongside.
What the sources actually say
What is established
Reciting the Quran is rewarded, and Maryam is Quran. There is no authentic hadith connecting this specific surah to pregnancy, birth, or the health of a child.
What is not
Specific claims — that reciting it guarantees an easy birth, or that it must be completed, or that a particular chapter must be read on a particular week — do not come from the sunnah. They circulate widely and are repeated without a source.
Questions
Is there a hadith about reciting Surah Maryam during pregnancy?
No authentic hadith connects Surah Maryam specifically to pregnancy. The practice is a widespread custom, not an instruction from the Prophet ﷺ. Reciting it is still good, because it is Quran.
How long does Surah Maryam take to recite?
About 20 minutes at a normal murattal pace, and around 40 with a slow mujawwad recitation. The exact length is shown in the player before you start.
Can I listen to it during labour?
Yes, if it helps you. There is no prohibition, and many people find a familiar recitation steadying. What matters is that it is not treated as a replacement for medical care.
