بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Ayah 1 of 4

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,

Ayah 2 of 4

ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ

Allah, the Eternal Refuge.

Ayah 3 of 4

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

He neither begets nor is born,

Ayah 4 of 4

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ

Nor is there to Him any equivalent."

Surah Al-Ikhlas is recited before sleep as part of a practice reported in Sahih al-Bukhari (5017): Aisha described the Prophet cupping his hands, reciting Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, blowing lightly into his hands, and wiping what he could of his body, repeating this three times each night. Because the report is in Sahih al-Bukhari, its chain is regarded as authentic.
