Surah Al-Waqi’ah

Full Surah Al-Waqi’ah audio, how long it takes, and an honest look at the hadith about reciting it for poverty and rizq that is repeated everywhere.

Al-Waqi'ahAl-Waqi’ah, the full surah, 12 min, Mishary Alafasy
0:00 --:--

Surah Al-Waqi’ah (56) is 96 verses and takes about 9 to 14 minutes. It is one of the most recited surahs in daily practice across South Asia, largely because of a report that reciting it every night protects from poverty.

That report — "whoever recites Al-Waqi’ah every night will never be afflicted by poverty" — is found in Bayhaqi and elsewhere, and its chains are weak. Some scholars graded it acceptable as a virtue-based report; others rejected it outright. This is not a secret that hostile critics dug up: you will find it in the classical works. It is simply not repeated on the pages that sell the practice.

What is solid: the surah is Quran, reciting it is rewarded, and the tradition encourages a nightly portion of the Quran. If Al-Waqi’ah becomes that portion, you are doing a good thing regardless of the weakness of the specific promise. Read it for Allah, not for the report about money.

What to recite

What the surah is actually about

Al-Waqi’ah is about the event that will certainly occur: the three groups on the Day of Judgement, the companions of the right, the companions of the left, and the foremost. It is a surah of perspective, and reciting it at night was understood by early generations as a way to end the day facing the right direction.

If rizq is the actual worry

The Quran gives more direct things than a nightly surah for financial difficulty: the obligation to be honest in trade, the command to give charity, and the verse that ties provision to taqwa (65:2-3). If the anxiety is debt, the practical part is a budget and a conversation with a creditor, and the spiritual part is du’a and tawakkul. Recitation is not the whole answer and was never presented as one.

What the sources actually say

The report on poverty

Reported by Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Iman and by others, from a chain containing narrators considered weak. Ibn Kathir mentions it with a note on its weakness. Scholars differ on whether it may be used for encouragement; the safest description is that the promise is not established with certainty.

What is not disputed

The surah is part of the Quran, its recitation is rewarded, and nightly recitation as a habit is encouraged in general terms.

Questions

How long does Al-Waqi’ah take to recite?

Around 9 to 14 minutes at a measured pace. The exact length of the recording you choose is shown in the player before you start.

Is the hadith about Al-Waqi’ah and poverty authentic?

The report is weak by the standards of hadith criticism, though some scholars have accepted it for the purpose of encouraging good deeds. It is not strong enough to be presented as a promise from the Prophet ﷺ. Reciting the surah is good regardless.

Does reciting it bring money?

Nobody can promise that, and the Quran does not operate as a transaction. What the practice does is orient a person towards what matters and away from the panic that drives bad financial decisions.

Can I listen rather than read?

Yes. Listening is what most people manage at night. If you can read, read, because the surah is long and reading takes focus.

Before you take any of this as instruction: this page distinguishes what is established in the hadith from what is widespread custom. Where the basis is weak or absent, it says so. If you follow a scholar, follow them — this is a reading aid, not a fatwa.
